Poetry- a blur in the background by Sarah Frank

he will always remind her she is beautiful.

she will ignore him,

take him for granted,

fail to tell him she loves him,

yell at him,

block him out with closed doors

but he will find a way in

and he will still come back

with her favorite flowers

and chocolate strawberries

because those are her favorite.

he will deliver a kiss to her forehead,

ask what he can do for her

and remind her-

as if she could possibly forget-

that he loves her.

But when she eats the chocolate strawberries,

they will taste like chocolate

and strawberries

and not the love he infused them with,

not the love he made them with,

not the love he brought them with.

When she smells her flowers

they will smell like roses

and only roses.

She will not see how he cut all the thorns for her,

she will only see the petals

and the stem

and the ribbon holding them together

and everything else will fade to the background

as it always does,

‘everything else’

including him.
